MOMS The Word....

MOMS

MOMS (Mothers Own Milk Supporters) is a new drop-in group for pregnant women and breastfeeding mums and has been funded by Sure Start South West Bath and Bath Communities Partnership.

In September 2004, local mums who had breastfed signed-up to be trained as peer supporters to run the breastfeeding project.  Eleven mums completed 8 weeks training and now volunteer a few hours of their time each week to pass on their knowledge and experience of breastfeeding to others in the area.

In a survey, nine out of ten women who stop breastfeeding in the first 6 weeks said that they stopped before they wanted to. Katherine Palmer is one of the volunteers and had her first baby Alexander 6 months ago; “A lot of my friends gave up sooner than they wanted to because they didn’t have as much support as me. I am very proud I kept with it.  A group like this would have been a definite help to me when I started”.

The group runs every Friday 10am–12.30 at  Southdown Methodist Church, The Hollow, Southdown, Bath.  As well as the opportunity to chat to other breastfeeding mums, an on-site crèche, lunch and library scheme for borrowing breastfeeding slings and books is offered free of charge. If you are pregnant or a breastfeeding mum in the area, feel free to pop-in one Friday.  For further information contact Jenny Myatt on 01225 444791.
