Study Support and Educational Opportunities

Black Families Education Support Group

Funding: £59,158

Date of funding approved: November 2004

Date of project completion: March 2006

Project Summary

The project aims to raise educational achievement and enhance educational and employment opportunities for young people from Bath’s BOME communities.  It is targeted specifically at 11-16 year olds who are disaffected by mainstream education or at risk of being excluded.  Funding is sought to enable the Black Families Education Support Group to appoint a part time Study Support Co-ordinator and employ tutors.  The Study Support Co-ordinator will:

  • Develop and deliver a programme of ‘out of school hours’ tutor led learning activities.
  • Working with further and higher education providers, develop and implement a programme of activities to raise awareness of educational and progression opportunities.  Alongside this, a work experience programme will be developed to place young people in stimulating and vibrant work environments with local employers.
  • Co-ordinate a tuition scheme to provide access for families to additional home tuition across a range of school subjects, in particular those studied for GCSE courses.
  • Encourage and assist BOME voluntary organisations to build their capacity to deliver community led learning opportunities.
  • Promote equality of access to mainstream ‘out of school hours’ learning provision.
