Opportunities for Carers

The Care Network

Funding: £1900

Date funding approved: November 2004

Date of project completion: March 2005

Project summary

Informal carers are people looking after a dependant relative, friend, partner or disabled child. Carers can be a difficult group to reach. Many do not see themselves as Carers because of family ties or a sense of duty or feeling that they should be able to cope on their own. The Carers Network are aiming to identify and implement strategies which will reduce that isolation and enable carers to be recognised and be given the choices and options they need.

This project involves a dedicated Development Worker working intensively over a four month period within the SWT Community, engaging with local groups, churches, GP practices, schools and statutory services to identify better support for Carers living in the area. It will aim to raise awareness of who Carers are and what they do. Helping to identify new Carers and enable them, and existing Carers to access the support provided by the Care Network and other organisations relevant to their needs. This will the be the first step for many Carers to start thinking about their needs and the opportunities and options available to them.

It will involve strategies for future working within the SWT area so that the community has greater capacity to recognise and support Carers. It will be the first time that any intensive work will be done within a particular geographical area to see how carers can be better reached.
